1,800 Miles: Striving to End Sexual Violence, One Step at a Time

Autor Joshua Daniel Phillips
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 31 dec 2009
¬We must be actively against instead of passively for sexual violence.‾ - 1,800 Miles
Sexual violence is a cultural issue that will not go away just because we ignore it.  Three college friends understood this and decided to do something.  With few resources and little funding, they headed to Miami in the summer of 2008 and were ready to walk all the way to Boston in an effort to raise awareness about sexual violence. Carry their only possessions on their backs and never knowing where they would be sleeping at the end of each day, they slowly made their way up the East Coast. However, they did have their set backs as certain days included being chased by dogs and walking numerous miles through the rain.
Despite these adversities, the three walkers continued forward for three long, hot summer months. Along the way, they talked to the media, met survivors, and even spent the night with a Senator.  1,800 Miles recounts those stories both humorous and heartbreaking from the walk and is sure to be a story that inspires other social activists to start moving forward ª one step at a time.

Notă biografică

Josh Phillips has been actively advocating against sexual violence since 2003 when he joined an advocacy group at Central Michigan University.  Since then he has had the privilege of presenting numerous programs on campuses and in communities throughout the United States.  Because he situates sexual violence as a cultural issue, his education philosophy is that we must be actively against sexual violence instead of passively for it.  Between his undergraduate and graduate work Josh took a year to volunteer in Camden, New Jersey working at homeless shelters and after-school programs. When he returned to CMU in 2007 for graduate work, he and two fellow advocates attempted their own active resistance against sexual violence when they created the group East Coast Walkers.  In the summer of 2008 the East Coast Walkers efforts were manifest when they successfully completed a 1,800 mile walk from Miami to Boston to raise awareness about sexual violence.  JoshΣs hope is to use stories from the walk to inspire others to creatively engage in everyday activism in an effort to create dialogue about social justice and the issues that affect us all.
