21st Century Africana Media Studies Reader provides students with an interdisciplinary look at African-American media from a variety of perspectives through a selection of carefully selected readings. This unique approach helps students develop a holistic understanding of modern African-American media, as well as the knowledge and tools necessary for critical media analysis. The text is divided into three sections: issues of representation; textual analysis and cultural criticism; and intersectional analysis of gender, race, and class. Akil Houston earned his M.A. in international studies, M.F.A. in film production, and Ph.D. in cultural studies in education from Ohio University. He is an associate professor of cultural and media studies at Ohio University. His research draws on the fields of Africology/African-American media, cinema, cultural, and gender studies.
