A light tone, some silly, some serious, some science, and some characters that are fun, irritating, cranky, boozy, laughable, touchy, nuts, smart, and thoughtful make the mishmash of their personalities crazy to follow as the travelers learn they will contribute something dear to stay alive in the cold and wait for help. But will it be enough? This is a wonderfully crafted tale of a crazy assortment of travelers that get themselves into a bit of trouble with Mother Nature. A story that tells of holiday travelers anticipating their trips to a variety of destinations that leads them across the barren interstate of Western Kansas where electronic communication is stunted from the snowstorm, the lack of cell towers, and no satellite coverage. As weather deteriorates most manage to stop at the lone truck stop, Agnes' Midnight Truck Stop Diner, where Agnes herself, the corn-fed, beef-raised, middle-aged, waitress-owner warns them about the possibility of a serious outbreak of harsh winter weather that can come barreling down the plains from the Dakotas through Nebraska and into Kansas with few natural obstructions to slow it down. But the travelers discount her years of veteran weather experience and her practical knowledge of the interstates across the bleak winter expanse of western Kansas. One by one the travelers blow her off and think her warnings are doubtful, born of irrational fears. Others are just in such a holiday rush they don't pay attention to the obvious signs other than the neon "open" sign in front of the diner. Each traveler thinks they can beat the weather, pushing onward, despite Agnes' warnings about the seemingly ludicrous formation of sinister mega-drifts veiled by the darkness of night that sometimes pile up across the interstates causing vehicle pile ups. Personal problems, personalities, and modes of transportation eventually collide with a Siberian Express blizzard and the travelers have to take a stand against a highway obliterating mega-drift. They learn that to have any chance at surviving from the severe cold, wind and snow, and the eventual rush of the oncoming conga-line of interstate snowplows that stops for nothing, they finally grasp that they have to put their heads together to conceive a plan to be rescued from sitting ducks they have become. All their electronic gadgets and devices are useless and they have to rely on some old science to try to get help before they freeze or get scraped off the interstate like people pancakes by the plows.
