Over a decade in the making, this new biography of Joseph R. McCarthy revisits McCarthy's charges, drawing on newly public material from Soviet archives and United States Army intelligence projects. In putting together this work, Richard Fried consulted manuscripts of forty-seven McCarthy Senate colleagues and those of other politicians whose paths crossed or neared his. He exploited the papers of twenty journalists. He used records of two close co-workers and those of pro- and anti-McCarthy activists, both insiders and viewers from afar. These sources and more afford a multi-focal view of the political and institutional setting in which McCarthy operated. While much McCarthy correspondence can be found in these collections, they offer an additional perspective, from the outside in, not just inside out.
