After presenting the five biographies, Cavanaugh goes on to explain how children learn to read and write; what kinds of schools foster this learning; the roles of teachers, students, and parents; and the important tools of grading, evaluation, and assessment. In all these areas there are important lessons to learn from the past.

M. P. CAVANAUGH was a high school English teacher until she began teaching courses on Reading and Writing across the Curriculum and Children's Literature and Language Arts at the college level. She is Assistant Professor in the Department of Education at John Carroll University in Ohio. Her current research interests are in ESL and the history of bilingual education.
