With the Vietnam War now over, the summer of 1974 is a time of uncomfortable change for the country. Brett Roberts is eighteen, uncertain about his future, and is determined to hitchhike across the country to see about a girl he met in Florida the previous summer. He doesn't know it yet, but he is about to encounter an unexpectedly eclectic mix of people.
