The English writer Mrs. Bishop (aka Isabella Bird) was a household name in the 19th century, and one of the great female explorers of all time. In 1873 she travelled extensively in the Rocky Mountains of North America, especially in the Colorado Territory, still a very wild place at the time. This book consists of the letters she wrote to her sister about her experiences there, including her encounters with the one-eyed desperado and outlaw Jim Nugent, who was killed shortly afterwards. Mrs. Bishop's book will appeal to any aficionado of quality travel writing, or to those with an interest in American frontier history.
