A Man without Love is just about that. This story could have easily been about a woman without love, but I only knew about Bill Gump... and he was a bloke. A human being can experience "Joy" and maybe a "Surprise" at finding "love"; then again a person can experience "Sadness," "Anger," and "Fear" at the thought of losing, or... never finding "love." I have since discovered this love business is an exceedingly serious subject indeed. History has provided us with many examples of how love has influenced and changed a person's normal balanced state of mind. Wars bitterly fought, and Kingdoms given away, with many a murder committed in the name of love... Yes I do fully understand that this is indeed a tricky subject for a simple business man like me to write about... but then again, I felt that I must write this particular moving true story while I still have most of the details in my mind. Just whom do you turn to for guidance and advice on such a tricky subject as this... that's right, you're own loved one... the wife. Problems surfaced early, especially after advising my lady that I was going to write a love story about one of our ex-employees, a motor mechanic named Bill Gump. My lovely wife Lesley delicately drove the enormous challenge and complexity of the proposed task home to me. Lesley demanded to know what qualifications I had to write about "Love," a subject she considered I knew absolutely nothing about... this was shattering news. I gently tried to explain that this was a sort of bloke-love problem; being a powerful true love story, not from a woman's point of view at all... but from that of a bloke. Lesley hoped that Bill and I would be very happy together and left me standing there with a confused look on my face. Did I detect something wrong with my proposed book writing idea, or was it bewilderment at me taking an interest in another person's love-life, even though that person is... a bloke. We blokes do talk about love all the bloody time; yes we do. For starters, all admit they have experienced the love of a sport, could be footy, or possibly horse racing, maybe we might love our job. On the other hand it could be a dream performance Ute, or car. Then we can also have a love of food, and drinking booze, possibly a good friend might deserve your love and respect, but be careful... no touching, or soft words. That sort of stuff could get you a swift punch in the face. After a few years a bloke soon notices that his large group of pals down at the pub is getting smaller... then you realise why. The bastards are all caving in. They are all getting bloody married, and then you start thinking... is this it? Slowly you figure things out, it's you who has the problem... you are a slow starter. Too many years in love with motor cars, footy, and drinking, and having what you thought was a good time... ... Nature takes over; you feel the pangs of want for another... a sole mate... a woman. There is not a more basic and more powerful human instinct that any normal red-blooded bloke has ever experienced, than that of the love of a woman. Time slips by, months, then years, with many a good mating opportunity seemingly close and now lost on a regular basis. What can a man do... the situation is not getting any better. Other important things just seem to happen in your loveless life to eventually thinking of yourself as a total failure in all that you loved... and once lusted for. I will tell you the story of a young man who thought he would never find true love. Fortunately for him he was wrong, very wrong. On the other hand the long road to true love for this young man was rough and extremely painful... and might I add at this point a lot of hard work for his mates who cared a bit about him to help him succeed in his search for... natural true love.
