A Mass for the Dead

Autor Susan McDuffie
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 22 feb 2017
Scotland 1373: Crispinus, the head of Oronsay Priory, is found dead, strangled and battered, his mouth stuffed with sand, in the middle of the tidal strand separating the holy island of Oronsay from the larger island of Colonsay. The Lord of the Isles, overlord of the islands, assigns the task of finding the killer to Muirteach, the Prior's bastard son. Since breaking with his father and leaving the monastery, Muirteach has spent his time acting as scribe for his uncle, an island chieftain. Muirteach's father, a powerful churchman, leaves behind a mistress and several other bastards as well as his embittered eldest son, who is thankful he will never hear the words, "My bastard son, the cripple" again. As Muirteach seeks to find his father's murderer he is helped by the physician Fearchar Beaton, and his daughter Mariota. Muirteach himself is suspected of the murder, as are the Prior's mistress, her family, and the sub-prior. The killer strikes again, His Lordship wants the mystery solved before the Pope and the King in Edinburgh learn of it, and Muirteach himself must come to terms with his own troubled relationship with his father. Muirteach's investigation submerges him deep into a whirlpool of deceit, long buried sins, and treachery, from which no one emerges unscathed.

Notă biografică

A fan of historical fiction since childhood, Susan McDuffie spent such vast amounts of time reading stories set in the past that she wondered if she had mistakenly been born in the wrong century. As an adult her discovery that Clorox was not marketed prior to 1922 reconciled her to life in this era. Susan's childhood interest in Scotland was fueled by family stories of the McDuffie clan's ancestral lands on Colonsay and their traditional role as "Keeper of the Records" for the Lords of the Isles. Although Keeper of the Records may in fact have been a tedious position, it all sounded incredibly mysterious and intriguing to Susan. On her first visit to Scotland she hitchhiked her way through the Hebrides. Her initial visit to Colonsay and the Oronsay Priory ruins planted the seeds for her medieval mysteries. Those seeds have grown into the Muirteach MacPhee mysteries, set in medieval Scotland during the Celtic Lordship of the Isles. The series includes A MASS FOR THE DEAD, THE FAERIE HILLS (2011 New Mexico Book Awards "Best Historical Novel") and THE STUDY OF MURDER (New Mexico/Arizona Book Awards Finalist 2014). Paperback editions of the first two Muirteach MacPhee mysteries are forthcoming in spring of 2017, reissued by Liafinn Press. THE DEATH OF A FALCON, Muirteach's next adventure, is scheduled for publication by Bagwyn Books in July 2017. Susan frequently presents at workshops and conferences and regularly reviews historical fiction books for the Historical Novel Society's "Historical Novels Review. Susan lives in New Mexico and shares her life with a Native American artist and four unruly cats. She enjoys taking flamenco dance classes in her spare time. Susan loves to hear from readers and can be contacted via Facebook or through her website.
