It was the worst of times and there were no best of times on the horizon. But were ploughed on regardless. By the time we arrived in Cyprus, it was September 2008 and the world was heading for a deep recession and in Cyprus, we got more than we bargained for. We arrived by plane at Larnaca airport and within minutes of landing the authorities had lost our two dogs. Within weeks we had been evicted from our rented villa. Within months our car blew up. Within years the tiny Mediterranean island had gone bust and our closest neighbour, Syria, was in the throes of a bloody civil war. Was it something we said?
