A Patient's View of Nurses and Doctors

Autor MR John F. Sueta, MR Chris J. Sueta
en Limba Engleză Paperback
The following story is about human beings joined together in one of the most complex human interactions possible, that intense relationship that occurs between hospital patients and medical personnel. The story of my fight against a paralyzing illness is merely the vehicle for telling the more important underlying story of the compassion of medical personnel and the great work they do under incredibly difficult conditions. The journey is a path that wends its way through dozens of medical and interpersonal situations. On the path, the attitudes, behaviors, and skills of medical people are described from a patient's point of view. Conversely, my own feelings and behavior, both good and bad, are revealed as I interact with my caregivers. Many important issues are covered along the way. They are serious topics, but I tried to explain them simply, with a light-hearted touch. Medical issues: An explanation of stress, its causes, effects, and ways to cope with it. An update of what's being done in paralysis research and treatment. Common hospital errors and what can be done about them. The method of weaning a patient off a ventilator. Nursing issues: Examples of good and bad nursing. The benefits of having a primary nurse rather than team nursing. The value of tough love. How to remain professional while being compassionate. Doctoring issues: The "doctor's dilemma" of what to tell a patient about the patient's recovery prospects. Allowing the patient to be a partner in the healing process. Patient issues: The "patient's dilemma" of whether to try for the next level of recovery or remain at the existing level. What is a "good" patient according to nurses and the patient himself? On becoming psychologically institutionalized. Life inside a totally paralyzed body while on a ventilator. The importance of family, friends, and other visitors. Illusions can be useful for mental well-being. A look at the irrational behavior that we all have at times. Determining the correct amount of physical therapy. Psychological issues: Psycho-babble vs a common sense, pragmatic method of counseling. The harmful psychiatric method of too much, too soon. Understanding the "demons" inside one's head and what they really are. What it's like to die, and the "dying experience" explained medically. Philosophical issues: The meaning of "handicapped" and what a patient must accept. Does altruism really exist? Examining the "real self" and why we try to hide it. This story is not always uplifting. It is impossible to fight for survival and mental well-being for almost three years in a hospital without experiencing tremendous highs and lows and I share them with you. Come along and experience with me, the fears, frustrations and triumphs that unfold along the way.
