From a very respectable position in Division One exactly a decade before, the season of 1969/70 crystallised the decline and fall of Preston North End, who would have to swim in the murky waters of Division Three for the very first time. The new manager Alan Ball Snr, having no real room for manoeuvre in the transfer market, would have to use every ounce of his motivational skill and invention to just maintain the status quo, let alone challenge for promotion.
