An ex-marine, Hendo, who has retired to Marblehead Ma. to teach sailing stumbles across and thwarts a nuclear attack on Boston, setting off a chain of events that span from an abandoned island off New England, to Bermuda, Tampa, to Washington, DC. Throughout Hendo tries to cope with the transitions from Marine to civilian, from loner to lover.
