Zeyneb Hanoum and her sister Melek were the inspiration for Pierre Loti's novel "Les Desenchantees," and in a series of letters written from exile in France between 1906-12 Zeyneb explains the disenchantment of cultured Turkish women with the pampered yet restricted life of the harem and reveals their inability to accept Western civilisation.
