A-Z of Hull: A-Z

Kingston upon Hull has witnessed huge changes in its history. The city's position on the confluence of the River Hull and the Humber estuary enabled it to grow into a major port and trading centre, with fishing and whaling as significant industries.

Hull's industrial importance meant the city suffered devastating aerial bombardment during World War 2 and the decline in fishing and other traditional industries in the postwar era has meant that much of the city has had to be rebuilt or regenerated in recent decades.

In recognition of the city's cultural heritage and its regeneration, Hull was awarded the accolade UK City of Culture in 2017.
