Martha was a busy woman. She carried a heavy load. While others rested or sat quietly, Martha was always working. Martha was one of those people we naturally love-she had a welcoming personality, she was a cook and a hostess, she was always busy with her preparations, and for that she was loved and admired. One thing led to another and before she realized it, Martha was far too devoted to her worldly obligations. She was so focused on her work that she was distracted from the better things which were right under her nose. She was so worried and bothered about so many things that she ignored the best thing. When others around her chose the preferable course of action, Martha persisted in fulfilling her worldly obligations. One might even say that she recklessly disregarded what she should have been doing. On June 4, 2003, the Securities and Exchange Commission charged Martha with lying, fabricating, and misrepresenting facts. She had received "nonpublic information" from her stockbroker regarding her ImClone stock which she promptly sold. By selling when she did, Stewart avoided losses of $45,673. Thereafter, according to the SEC, Martha Stewart tampered with and altered an important piece of evidence-an e-mail message. Martha was so focused on selling her ImClone stock and avoiding a loss that she ignored the law.
