Abroad and Beyond: Patterns in American Overseas Education

Autor Craufurd D. Goodwin, Michael Nacht
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 26 mai 1988
In Abroad and beyond, Professors Goodwin and Nocht discuss the exploding American students' interest in overseas studies. The authors investigate the numerous study foreign policies and programs, clarifying for the reader issues of special relevance to this fast-moving field. In addition to describing many of the innovative programs across the country, they explain why students go abroad, how they go, and the ways in which they benefit. They also discuss the problems that the students create - for themselves and for their institutions - and the consequent policy issues that must be addressed. Bringing their fresh perspective to this subject, Goodwin and Nocht cut through the frequent vehemence and intolerance of the field's various contesting parties. Recommendations are made to campus leaders on how best to confront policy decisions in this hotly debated field. As such, Abroad and beyond should be useful to deans, provosts, presidents, legislators, foundation officers, and faculty members who are connected with foreign study policy.

Recenzii

'I am truly impressed with the organization, overview, and theoretical construct which the authors are able to devise for a subject of such wide scope and variability. The work is both important and useful. It provides a wealth of carefully reasoned arguments that can be used to persuade other campus administrators of points that we have been trying to make for years Faire L. Goldstein, Office of International Programs, Brandies University
'I think the book is excellent. It is clear, well written, stimulating, and most important, it can be helpful to a wide variety of readers. The publication will stimulate much needed discussion about current study abroad programs and the need for self-assessment, as well as encourage consideration of new program models. It is a first-rate contribution to the literature on international education. Cassandra A. Pyle, Council for International Exchange of Scholars
