Adjustment of Transfer Students in Four Year College

Autor Maureen Linton
de Limba Germană Paperback – 25 oct 2013
The majority of students attending community colleges across America, plan to transfer to four- year colleges to complete baccalaureate degree requirements. Over 50% of transfer students achieve this goal but less than 20% actually graduate and obtain the degree. This is due to a combination of factors including poor preparation at both high school and community college levels, and transfer students' inability to take full advantage of adjustment strategies offered by the four-year college. Community colleges; however, have consistently continued to provided access and educational opportunity to the majority of multicultural diverse student population. The study revealed that transfer students succeeded when the four-year college made determined efforts to provide quality adjustment interventions including accurate academic advising, writing and computer labs, mentoring and flexible schedules. It is recommended that higher education administrators and policymakers take these factors into account as they seek to improve the overall state of higher education for transfer students.
