"Aesop's Fables Set In Verse" is a selection of these venerable short tales, which the author has augmented by setting them in verse. But their modest bearing belies their true nature. All virtually metaphorical, they are succinct commentaries on the foibles of the human psyche. As insightful and practicable as they were at the time of their creation two and a half millennia ago, they warrant the same level of recognition today. Reading them, one cannot avoid linking Aesop's characters, in whatever guise they are depicted, with people of their acquaintance, either personal or by repute. H. Jerome Alter feels that the verse setting into which he has carefully placed them is an enhancement feature which imparts a musical flow to the details as they unfold. His sense is that well-crafted poetry is artistically superior to prose.
