Richard J. Powell is the John Spencer Bassett Professor of Art and Art History at Duke University. Virginia Mecklenburg is the acting chief curator at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C. Theresa Slowik is the chief of publications at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
