In the same way that God used signs and symbols to communicate the popular book of Revelation to the apostle John, he also used them to communicate to Zechariah and other prophets before him. Through centuries apart, John and Zechariah were each given relevant information intended to bring assurance of God's presence and victory in spirit of insurmountable obstacles. While many are familiar with the beastly presence of Imperial Rome in John's day, few understand the setting and importance of the forces known by Zechariah during the highly significant, early post-exilic years after the return of God's people from the Babylonian Captivity. Remarkably, even 2500 years later, the strange visions of this ancient Israelite prophet provide relevant insight into how God uses crisis to reshape his people into the image of his glorious son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
