Dr David Gates is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the author of numerous publications on aspects of the history of war and on contemporary military matters. Among other distinctions, he has been awarded the Royal Air Force’s Salmond Prize in Air Power Studies.
Dr Ben Jones is Senior Lecturer at Portsmouth Business School at the Royal Air Force College, Cranwell, UK.

Drawing on archival as well as secondary sources, the book examines key themes within the sphere of air power in the maritime environment. Providing an essentially chronological study that encompasses the period of the First World War up to the present day, it explores international thinking and practice. Emphasising the evolution of various concepts and capabilities, the book analyzes the strategies and experiences of several nations, most notably the Americans, Japanese and British.
