The Alentejo is one of the lesser known of Portugal's five regions despite its proximity to the famous Algarve. The sweeping plains and golden wheat fields stretch inland beyond the Serra do Caldeirao and the Monchique mountains and this up-and-coming tourist destination is dotted with sleepy white villages.
