All Edge: Inside the New Workplace Networks

Autor Clay Spinuzzi
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 16 mar 2015
All Edge: Inside the New Workplace Networks looks at the complex and innovative networking and communication practices of a new kind of work group defined primarily by its transience and flexibility and found most commonly in the knowledge industry. These nimble teams organize together around a specific project, recruiting personnel, assigning roles, establishing project plans and objectives, and then disband once the work is done, with the individuals moving on to their the next projects, with different personnel, different roles, and different objectives, all with little hierarchical oversight. Author Clay Spinuzzi calls theses groups all-edge adhocracies; all-edge is meant to invoke the notion of boundaries, which for these groups are ever shifting and are where much of their work takes place, and adhocracy offers a counterpoint to bureaucracy.
Drawing on workplace studies he has conducted, Spinuzzi looks at three different environments in which these groups are common: nonemployee firms, coworking spaces, and traditional hierarchical organizations. He offers for the first time a comprehensive framework for understanding how these groups function, what conditions they require to thrive, and what their strengths and weaknesses are. The author shows across the case studies that these groups are consistently flexible, creative, and innovative but are also temporary, tactical, and reactive. These groups have come to play an important role in today s knowledge economy, and All Edge defines and delimits that role for the first time.

Recenzii

"Spinuzzi has written a highly intelligent and interesting account of his research into 'all edge' work groups. . . . This is a well-written, boundary-crossing book, accessible to a wide readership."

"Through the peerless empirical work for which he is known, Clay Spinuzzi looks under the hood of the contemporary economy, showing how automation, standardization, and interdependence underlie organizational forms of work that seem, on the surface, to run on unadulterated agility, fluidity, and adaptation to change. The invisible labor of bringing stability to work in today’s economy has never been told the way Spinuzzi tells it. This book is essential, fascinating reading for all interested in labor relations, technology in the workplace, and the massive changes in the economy all around us."

"In All Edge, Spinuzzi gives us a look at the new workplace, the one we’ve been told is coming for decades now, in striking and compelling detail. Academic readers will appreciate the grounding of the work in scholarship by the author as well as others in areas such as organizational communication and business and technical writing. Professionals and readers with an interest in understanding contemporary workplaces will appreciate the way the book is presented in a clear and anecdotal style, with the scholarly references provided unobtrusively for further reading.
