When art critic and ageing hipster Ian Hurst arrives in the Central American republic of San Itairi, he's not prepared for the prejudice, squalor and violence he encounters - and that's just the British tourists. Stranded by a transport strike, he is forced to stay at the tacky Las Cantatas resort and confront a part of his national culture he'd rather have nothing to do with. Despite initially impressing holiday maker Karen Kay and officious rep Trisha, Ian's snobbery rapidly alienates him from the rest of the beer loving, bingo playing guests. As the strike becomes an uprising and the island descends into chaos, Ian is forced to make a terrible choice between loyalty to art, or loyalty to his fellow Britons. Following in the tradition of black humour which will be familiar to fans of Tom Sharpe, Kingsley Amis and Keith Waterhouse, this novel takes a darkly funny look at the British abroad and the snobbery of today's self-appointed intellectual elite.
