Recenzii

American Theatre, like the earlier volumes, represents a heroic compilation effort and a fine place to begin one's research or to take a quick look at a play or a season in the New York theatre during the last three decades of the twentieth-century. Oxford and Hischak should be congratulated for continuing the series.
Hischak, who won ALA's Outstanding Academic Book award in 1995 for The American Musical Theatre Song Encyclopedia, examines over 2000 plays....A well-written diary of theater events [whose] small-print format belies the energy and readability of the text....A valuable reference [r]ecommended for academic and large public libraries.
How wonderful that Oxford has latched on to Thomas Hischak for the latest volume of its history of American comedy and drama! He knows his facts and is such a compelling writer that this update can only thrill lovers of American theatre.
Hischak's latest volume in this classic reference set...continues the breezy style and comprehensive coverage of previous volumes....Instead of supplying capsule entries for each play, Hischak writes chapter-length essays for each entire season, trying to summarize its mood, tenor, and character...Although clearly most appropriate for reference collections, the book's engaging style and readability may warrant a second copy for circulation.
This volume is just as valuable as the previous ones for all major and minor library collections and all theatre historians and aficionados should have it in their collections.
