An Imitation of Life is the story of a modern type Frankenstein who in his willfulness, creates a lover for himself but then finds his creation revolting and leaves it to die. The Creature lives and struggles to understand his creation, struggles to understand why the man he loves, his creator, has left him alone in a land that hates him and seeks to destroy him. The ending of this book is the justification of the creature, an ending worth of its creation.
