In a matter of two days the quiet lonely life of Hannah Jacobs makes a complete turnaround. She is stunned when she sees none other than Ezekiel Melancon along with his brother Budrow unloading a rental truck at the house next door. Patricia Melancon or Miss Mel as she is known to many in the City of Seaside, California, and her daughter Shantrell are Hannah's new neighbors. Hannah has a great deal of respect and admiration for Miss Mel and Zeke Melancon but little regard for Shantrell and the womanizing Budrow. The day following the arrival of Hannah's new neighbors, fate lays a cruel circumstance at her door in the form of an unexpected visit from her tempestuous cousin Dana who she has not seen in two years. After a five day visit from Dana, the Melancon family becomes essential to Hannah's daily life. She finds herself instantly drawn to Zeke Melancon but not surprisingly Budrow is the first to make a play. The entire Melancon family undergird the hard working Hannah and help her navigate crisis after crisis. Hannah's close knit neighbors provide her with both protection and sage advice. As she learns that her assumptions about the Melancons were misguided, she develops strong feelings for each member of the family, especially one of the Melancon brothers.
