Autor PA Rees
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 7 apr 2011
This book is intended as an introductory text for students studying a wide range of courses concerned with animal management, zoo biology and wildlife conservation, and should also be useful to zookeepers and other zoo professionals. It is divided into three parts. Part 1 considers the function of zoos, their history, how zoos are managed, ethics, zoo legislation and wildlife conservation law. Part 2 discusses the design of zoos and zoo exhibits, animal nutrition, reproduction, animal behaviour (including enrichment and training), animal welfare, veterinary care, animal handling and transportation. Finally, Part 3 discusses captive breeding programmes, genetics, population biology, record keeping, and the educational role of zoos, including a consideration of visitor behaviour. It concludes with a discussion of the role of zoos in the conservation of species in the wild and in species reintroductions. This book takes an international perspective and includes a wide range of examples of the operation of zoos and breeding programmes particularly in the UK, Europe, North America and Australasia.

Undergraduate and Graduate classes in Zoo Biology and Management, and training courses for zoo professionals, professional conservation practitioners especially those in captive breeding programmes The book is intended as an introductory academic text for those working with and studying zoos and zoo animals. It is aimed specifically at courses in Zoo Biology and Animal Management (as a core text), but would also be useful for courses in Conservation, Animal Welfare, Applied Animal Behaviour, and possibly Veterinary Science. The programme I manage at the University of Salford will have an intake of around 80 students in September 2008. This has grown from around 25 in 2002. There has been a similar growth in Animal Management courses in colleges, with some now having their own zoos e.g. Reeseheath College, Walford & North Shropshire College. UCAS lists 12 institutions offering Animal Management courses and 13 offering Conservation courses at HND level. A further 14 institutions offer courses listed as Zoological Conservation and 222 listed under Conservation. A large number of US universities offer courses in Conservation, Behaviour and Animal Sciences. The Jersey Wildlife trust offers specialist training courses in Zoo Biology. There are approximately 350 zoos in England. There are over 200 AZA accredited zoos in the USA. There are around 1300 institutions that are either members of or associated with the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. All of these institutions employ inexperienced staff who could benefit from access to a single source of information on Zoo Biology.
