Notă biografică
Prof. Ludovico Docimo graduated in Medicine at the University of Naples Federico II, where he also specialized in General Surgery. He spent training periods at St. Mark’s Hospital for Diseases of the Colon, Rectum and Anus in London, at the Centre Hospitalier Général in Toulon, at the Harvard University-Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and at the Jefferson University of Philadelphia. In 2002 he became full professor of General Surgery at the Second University of Naples, now renamed University of Campania L. Vanvitelli. As for his academic roles, he is the Director of the Chair of General Surgery, of the Division of General, Minimally Invasive, Oncologic and Obesity Surgery of the Department of General and Specialty Surgery and of the University Master’s Degree in Colon Proctology and Rehabilitation of the Pelvic Floor. He is the author of over 200 scientific papers with an H-index of 23 and over 1300 citations. He is a member of the editorial board of Aggiornamenti in Chirurgia and of Annali Italiani di Chirurgia. President of the Collegio dei Professori Ordinari e Straordinari di Chirurgia Generale, of the Società Italiana dei Chirurghi Universitari, of the Società Napoletana di Chirurgia, and of the Società Italiana di Fisiopatologia Chirurgica, Prof. Docimo has been advisor to the Ministry of Health for Training Events in Surgery. He has performed more than 20,000 operations in general, bariatric, colorectal and abdominal wall surgery.
Prof. Luigi Brusciano graduated in Medicine and specialized in General Surgery, Digestive Surgery and Gestrointestinal Endoscopy. He gained his PhD in Research in Gastrointestinal Biotechnology at the Seconda Università di Napoli, now renamed University of Campania L. Vanvitelli. He worked at St Mark’s Hospital & Academic Institute, London, at the Colorectal Surgery Unit in Villa Flaminia, Roma, at Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève, Département de Chirurgie, Unité de Proctologie, and at St Mary’s Hospital, Department of Surgical Oncology & Technology, Imperial College London. Associate Professor of General Surgery at the University of Campania L. Vanvitelli, he is the coordinator of the Center for Pelvic Floor Pathology at the Unit of General Surgery, Minimally Invasive, Bariatric and Oncological Surgery and the scientific coordinator of the 2nd-level Master’s in Coloproctology and 1st-level Master’s in Diagnostics and Rehabilitation of the Pelvic Floor at the same university. Prof. Brusciano is the author of over 150 scientific publications in national and international journals and of two monographs. He has performed over 1600 procedures in general, minimally invasive and laparoscopic, bariatric and coloproctological surgery. This open access book describes the latest advances in the diagnosis and treatment of anal incontinence. Anal incontinence is a devastating condition that heavily impacts on the patients’ lives. Those suffering from this disorder are generally highly embarrassed and reluctant to undergo appropriate clinical evaluation, thus becoming more isolated and worsening their quality of life. Fortunately, a wide range of treatments are now available to improve this distressing condition; however, recognition of the related pathophysiological alterations is mandatory to ensure its successful management.
