Loosely based on fact, the story begins in 1579 France and recounts the life of Germaine Cousin, noting her infirmities; in reality she had a skin disease and a club hand. The story follows the marriage of the child's father and step-mother and her own relegation to life in the barn, since she was unacceptable to people. This little girl was frequently ill and abused and appears to have been treated as a servant. She was a shepherdess but never complained about her lot.
Frequently guided by glorious illuminations and resonances, the child's guardian angel protected her in times of peril. She was fond of all creation, often sharing what little she had with town orphans; thus she is known as the Saint of children.
