Another Reality: American University Studies, cartea 10

Autor Kathleen Anne Perry
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 31 oct 1989
Another Reality is a study of the philosophical implications of the literary theme of metamorphosis in the works of Ovid, Petrarch, and Ronsard. For these poets, metamorphosis becomes a means of expressing their scepticism towards repressive intellectual authority, of exploring the value and creative potential of their own subjectivity, and of developing new theories of the imagination. In the works of Ronsard in particular, the imagination becomes the mental faculty most significant for the production of poetry.

Recenzii

This is truly original work in that it defines and investigates a large, important, and (so far as I am aware) virtually unexamined complex of questions. It is based on an excellent knowledge of Ovid, the Ovidian tradition, classical sources of skepticism (esp. Sextus Empiricus and Cicero), and the entire Renaissance poetic tradition. (Edwin M. Duval, Yale University) ...an excellent work. It shows thorough, sensitive familiarity with the three poets as well as with the literary contexts and conventions that shaped their writing. Professor Perry reads insightfully and draws original yet judicious conclusions from her material. She carefully develops metamorphosis as both a thematic and a structural element in the works of her three poets, then skillfully relates that concept to contemporary philosophical arguments. I expect that the book will be well-received by Renaissance scholars, classicists and specialists in poetry.
