Anthracite Grade School on Irish Hill is a story about life in and around coal mines in the middle of the twentieth century as seen through the eyes of a young boy as he grows from ages nine through seventeen while working under the intense but heartfelt guidance of a father whom he worships. The story often presents:

* A collection of humorous episodes as when miners frighten the nine-year-old into believing he is pursued by a bear, or playfully tease him later with crude stories about women which the na've boy doesn't understand but repeats to his mother, or when the impressionable boy admires and eventually adopts his father's inclination toward hilarious but dangerous pranks.

* An adventure as when the boy travels underground at age eleven to assist miners in tight work chambers where they can barely fit, or when at age thirteen he enters an abandoned mine with his father to drill and blast a drain hole under a water-filled strip mine, or when as a young teenager he enthusiastica
