Born in Poland in 1925, Erna Blau had a happy childhood, a loving family, and dreams of becoming a doctor. This carefree existence was cut short by the Second World War. With her mother and sister, Erna fled Poland soon after the Nazi invasion.They eventually found refuge in a remote area of modern-day Tajikistan. It was there that Erna met Yonas, the love of her life and future husband.After the war ended, Erna and Yonas settled in Israel, where she wrote the first draft of Anya's Story in 1955. The book's titular character was named in memory of her older sister, who tragically fell victim to cholera and passed away in 1939. Drawn from Erna's own experiences during and after the war, as well as those of her close friends, Anya's Story is not a biography. Rather, it is a narrative mosaic inspired by the stories of many survivors.
