Blended families are especially difficult for young children. These children had to transition and cope with having just a single parent, and now have to learn how to live with the introduction of a new parent, as well as the possibility of having new brothers or sisters. They are confused and worried that they may lose the relationships they have with their parent and extended family. To them, the new, blended family members are strangers. The additional stress of moving to a new home makes them worry that all that the familiar things with their family that they have come to know will be gone. The only thing familiar to them is the love of their parent, and they are scared that love may now be diminished. I hope that with this book, we can show that children are not losing the love of one parent, but gaining the love of their new family. Creating a new family does not happen at one time, but is a process that occurs over years. It is important that we take the child's feelings seriously and include them in the process of creating a new family.
