George W. Dodge, a local historian and president of the Arlington Historical Society, has combined over 200 images with vivid stories that capture the spirit of American men and women during difficult times. Kim B. Holien is a professional military historian and author. The vignettes and photographs selected chronicle the lives of participants in such momentous battles and events as the winter at Valley Forge, Bull Run, Antietam, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, Appomattox, Little Big Horn, Manila Bay, the Argonne Forest, Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, Normandy, Bastogne, Korea, and Vietnam. Also covered are events such as Lincoln's assassination, medical breakthroughs, landmark judicial decisions, polar explorations, and astronauts on the moon.
