First published in the original Norwegian in 1858, this was the second of Björnson's "peasant tales". Bjørnson is considered as one of The Four Greats (De Fire Store) of Norwegian literature and is celebrated for his lyrics to the Norwegian National Anthem, "Ja, vi elsker dette landet".
