The question seems simple enough: Should the Britons attack the Saxons or simply defend their hill fortress from the Saxon invasion? Choose the sword or the shield? Though King Arthur's advisers have plenty of arguments for both, the ruler himself remains silent. No longer the decisive champion of his earlier reign and without the presence of Guinevere or Merlin, he doubts they can succeed at either.

The Saxons, on the other hand, have every confidence of victory. Not only are they led by the fierce Mil the Black, they also have the secret insights of one whose only goal is to defeat Arthur-Morgan, a witch...and sister to the king.
