The Ashmolean began when the wealthy antiquary Elias Ashmole (1617–92) gifted his collection to the University of Oxford in 1682. Today, the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology houses Western Art, Eastern Art, Antiquities, Cast Gallery and the Coin Room. The beautiful Victorian paintings in this calendar are taken from the collection and include works by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Charles Allston Collins and William Burges.
