The MGM motion picture "At First Sight" was based on the real-life story of Shirl Jennings, whose sight was restored after forty years of blindness. Val Kilmer and Mira Sorvino portrayed the main characters. As part of his rehabiliation into the world of sight, Shirl enrolled in art classes, and one of his drawings is on the cover of the book.
