Atlas of Mid-Infrared Galaxy Morphology: The S4G Spitzer Survey

Autor Ronald J. Buta, Johan H. Knapen, Kartik Sheth
en Limba Engleză Mixed media product – mar 2025
This Atlas and Catalog collects the main data products of the S4G project, including deep mid-IR imaging; total mid-IR magnitudes and color indices; mid-IR isophotal and effective diameters and axis ratios; bulge, disk, and bar scale lengths, characteristic surface bright nesses, and fractional contributions to the total luminosity; and auxiliary data from other sources, such as optical and UV magnitudes and colors, radial velocities, and distance estimates. The quantitative mid-IR parameters will be taken from the various publications of the S4G team, and will be included with appropriate references. Other parameters will be gathered from other published sources.

Notă biografică

Ronald J. Buta was a coauthor of the Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies (RC3), a standard reference for basic galaxy data since 1991, published by Springer. He was also a coauthor of the de Vaucouleurs Atlas of Galaxies, published in 2007 by Cambridge University Press.
Johan H. Knapen is a staff astronomer and head of the research division at the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias in Spain. He was previously professor of astronomy at the University of Hertfordshire in the UK. He has co-written over 100 refereed papers on astronomy, 8 invited reviews, and has edited two conference proceedings.
Kartik Sheth is an associate scientist at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Charlottesville, Virginia and the Principal Investigator of the S4G project. He was previously a staff scientist at the California Institute of Technology. He has co-written over 70 papers on astronomy and has edited two conference proceedings.

Caracteristici

Presents the definitive compendium of quantified galaxy morphology
Offers a powerful research tool to astronomers by presenting mid-IR observations of a well-calibrated and well-defined set of galaxies
Presents the largest galaxy atlas ever compiled in book form, revealing the morphology in the dust-penetrated infra-red part of the spectrum
Offers an essential point of comparison between the appearance of local galaxies and those at cosmological distances
