In 1938, in the aftermath of the enactment of the anti-Semitic laws of the Fascist Grand Council, which has made their fraternization a crime, Franco Lazar, who is 36 and Jewish, and Topazia Rosani, at 19, become tormented lovers, frantically on the run, while hiding in plain sight. Suspected of murdering a man, they are hounded and tortured by the ruthless rural police in Avezzano, Italy. Despite their heart-pounding, moment-by-moment plans to avoid capture amidst betrayal and violence, the obsessed authorities close in with an investigation against them for fraternizing and for the mysterious disappearance of the missing man.
