This thesis deals with the microstructure evolution and appearance, the quantitative and qualitative analysis in combination with classification of the appearing microstructures, the transformation mechanism and kinetics as well as the mechanical properties and fracture behavior of bainite in steels with a medium carbon level of 0.2 wt.-%.Ever since the discovery of bainite until today the bainitic phase transformation and its nomenclature have been topics of controversial discussions as they can not be defined unambiguously.In case of the transformation kinetics it is still discussed if the mechanism is diffusion or nucleation controlled. This topic is of major interest when it comes to process and steel design, because the heat treatment procedure applied must be adjusted to the existing transformation mechanism. As a result, one major goal of this thesis is to investigate the transformation kinetics and try to find evidence for one or other mechanism. For this reason, two conflicting transformation models are applied to the experimental data. Additionally, the orientation relationships of the parent austenite and the growing ferrite crystals are analyzed in order to find evidence for the transformation mechanism.
