As a youth growing up in East Texas, in the 1940's, I enjoyed a life I believe those before or after could never know. We, that is, my friends and I, all read and swapped comic books (we called them funny books). Bat Man, Rubber Man, Superman, Donald Duck were our heroes, our mentors But yes, we knew about that war; we knew our friends' fathers, brothers, uncles were off protecting us, and we knew many of them would never, never return to our little town.

I therefore dedicate this collection of "funny stories," "accounts," "serious inquires" and "Rhymes or Reasons" to that time, and to those men and women who protected us--some losing their lives--while guiding us to a place in the most wonderful of all nations. God bless those who brought our country through so many ordeals; God help us now shoulder the load for our own youngsters--and God Bless America
