Beth

Autor Mrs Elizabeth Manwaring
en Limba Engleză Paperback
Elizabeth Mayfield, known as Beth, remembers when England declared war on Germany. Her story is based on a child's experience as an evacuee, living on a farm in Devonshire during the war between the years 1939-1945. Beth's story begins in September 1939 when she was evacuated with her mother, sister and brother along with so many other children from London. Her father stayed behind to work at Croydon aerodrome 'to help with the war effort.' This book tells of her life at that time, of leaving her home in Croydon, South London with all the noise and destruction caused by the war and the extreme contrast of living on a farm in the peaceful countryside of North Devon. It describes the farm and the people who lived there, their daily life and seasonal work. The farm was called Lydacott. The farmhouse and its buildings stood on a hill where the fields sloped gently down to a stream and the village of Fremington. Lydacott was a mixed farm of animals and crops that belonged to Walter Bale and his wife Rose. They had no children of their own so were happy to take in Beth, her sister, brother and mother during the war. The story continues with the evacuees adapting to their completely new way of life and the years that followed in which the children grew and matured in their formative years away from the horrors of war. The realization when the war was over that they had to return to their home in Croydon and to their father was unbearable for them. The close relationships and hopes they had made are interwoven with their love of the farm. It was to be a devastating experience for them all when they did return and the events that took place were to change their lives forever.
