Blame It on the Day

Autor Bernadette Geoffry Ike
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 30 noi 2010
SynopsisBlame it on the day is a story about the ordinary life of an ordinary girl, and the story is narrated through her own voice. The story slips into psychological, spiritual, and philosophical dimensions explored through the simple life and experience of Clara. Clara herself is an epitome of humans in general. Too, in general, Blame it on the day can be described as a cocktail of themes, as life often is. In one hand Clara tries to find herself in a world of continuous change and ideology, and vehemently tries to salvage her own sense of self, and indeed how to make sense of all that is happening around her. Clara is a capricious but introspective girl, a 'would be' actress, who tries to deal with and understand the world and the people around her. The story too presents Clara as a multi-dimensional character. She is zany yet profound, unmistakably, she is an emotional and a naive character that experiences the world through the windows of emotion, and finds herself in awkward situations because of her own volatility and sensitivity. As a child, she experiences what it feels like to be without control, having witnessed the break-up of her parent's relationship. The story begins with the divorce of her parents whom she knew loved each other very much. She is a little relieved about the separation, yet she desires to see her parents together. Her mother in particular suffers from the break-up and Clara is heartbroken for her since it was equally clear to her that her mother still passionately loved Ray, her father. Ray is a flirt and meanwhile finds himself in a lot of relationships, none of which he could sustain. Clara scorns Ray for making her mother feel the way she did. She begins to question love and relationship. Is it more than love? Does love alone turn in on itself? She vows not to be like her feeble mother. When she and her mother moves from their family home, at the age of 8, Clara meets Robert who takes on the father role in her eyes, and through him she begins to take another perspective about the meaning of life and love. She later falls in love, as well as with the man, his two sons Samuel and Joshua too. Robert and his sons are a close family, and Clara found a place in that family to be herself. She struggles to deal with the norms governing relationships. She wants to be in control but does not live to be told what to or not to do. She finds herself fallen, deeply, in love with one of the brothers. Perhaps, on remembering her vow not to fall so blindly in love she embarks on exploration with other men. She is not successful at doing this. . Blame it on the day explores, with distinctive subtlety, the meaning of life. An antiquated quest perhaps, but the story hopes to have delved into this familiar territory albeit with humor. Clara learns to accept things as they are. Making sense of some things and putting down the rest to the order and cycle of the days and seasons- The sun rising early in the morning to awaken the self, to fill it with vigor and life. The position of the sun in new summers' light that saps that energy from the self- Or the sound of November rain that triggers the minds of lovers to cause them to reach out for each other's skin- She learns to deal with the things she can, and for the rest...
