This book contains stories about some of the patients I saw and situations I was in as a medical student and resident. The stories are not in chronological order and do not follow a timeline. I did this on purpose. I hope that by reading the stories one would get the feeling of what it was like to be a female medical student, and a female neurosurgery resident without the obligatory beginning of "On the first day of medical school ...." Memory does not follow timelines, it follows the fantastic and emotional and outlandish. We are the ones that force them into an order that is not natural. I was the first woman neurosurgery resident in the history of the residency program I was part of. A few years after my residency, when I was in practice, I decided to write out the stories. I composed an outline of what I considered to be interesting patient stories and found I had about 110 good ones. This book has the first twenty four. Since writing is not a strong talent of mine, I needed help. I joined a small town writing group that meet once a month. I wrote one story a month for review by the group. This was tremendously helpful and gave me an insight into the writing process. I give many thanks to the ladies in the writing group and their diligence in helping me. You know who you are. These stories are real, as I remember them. The names of all the physicians, patients, friends, and others are not their real names. I did not identify the hospitals by name or city either. My name as author is not my real name. That is because those names don't really matter. It is all to remain anonymous. Another reason is that it is not the doctors that are the heroes of these stories, it is the patients. The patients take all the risks during surgery, all the fear of something going wrong. Yet they bravely move forward. The physicians are the secondary actors in this scenario. I tried to describe as much as possible about surgeries and procedures without going into bloody details. However, surgery and trauma are bloody by nature. I hope you enjoy the stories. There are many more to come.
