Bookworms, by playwright Bernard Farrell, was first performed in the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, in February 2012.Bookworms is centred around an all-female book club and their decision to allow men join them for the first time, with husbands invited in.Their daily lives spill over into the book discussions. where suspicions are roused and tempers are frayed. Larry, an out-of-work builder, and Robert, a banker, are struggling in different ways. Ann is showing off her home and trying to be the perfect hostess, while Jennifer isn't used to her position as top-dog being challenged. And poor Dorothy has had a tough time of it recently, and wants to share her literary opinions with the group. But it's becoming increasingly clear that books are the last things on anybody's mind during this explosive evening!Farrell is an incredibly accomplished writer. He's won the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature, The Sunday Tribune Comedy of the Year Award, the Best Irish Production Award in the 1996 Dublin Theatre Festival and, in 1998, Kevin's Bed was nominated as best Irish Play in the Irish Times/ESB Theatre Awards.He is a member of Aosdána, was Writer-in-Association with the Abbey Theatre and from 1997 to 2004, served on the Board of Directors of the Abbey Theatre and this is his twenty first stage play, his eleventh to debut on the Abbey stage.

Notă biografică

Bernard Farrell was born in Sandycove, County Dublin. He has written seventeen plays, eight of these for the Abbey Theatre, including I Do Not Like Thee, Doctor Fell and The Last Apache Reunion. He has also written commissioned plays for Red Kettle Theatre Company, including Fourty-four Sycamore, and Happy Birthday Dear Alice. His plays for the Gate Theatre include the award-winning Stella By Starlight. He was elected to Aosdana in 1992, to the board of the Abbey Theatre in 1996 and is a recipient of the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature. Kevin's Bed was nominated as best new play in the 1998 Irish Times/ESB Theatre Awards.
