While walking and hitchhiking home to Mississippi from Washington, D.C., WWII Army Lieutenant Shepherd Haddon realizes that other wars await him on the homefront. Setting out to rehabilitate his physical injuries received in Italy, Shep is also using the time to absorb emotionally that he is no longer the man his beautiful, inscrutable wife, Dorthea, has always expected. At a backwoods gas station, beautiful Angelene Midnight, her dying great-grandmother, and Herculean driver Walter Smith are apparently unaware of what might assail them on their journey south. The local lawman covets their fine car, gas coupons and money, and Shep finds he must try to rescue this surprisingly mysterious trio. As the new foursome's odyssey unfolds and their destination becomes clear, they find refuge and opposition from both races along the way. As he falls for Angelene, he learns that an even greater danger is close behind. Shep will accept what both Dorthea and Angelene have told him, that all women have their secrets. While he is "BOUND FOR EBENEZER" and a battle among the stones of those at rest, Shep will uncover those secrets and pray that he is capable of handling whatever awaits him.
