Bozkurt-Pekar, D: Imagining Southern Spaces

en Hardback – 21 feb 2021
Identifying the antebellum era in the United States as a transitional setting under the globalization processes in the world and national consolidation processes accompanied by expansionist movements in the country, Imagining Southern Spaces investigates antebellum spatialization processes through analyses of spatial imaginations about the South where intensifying debates on the abolition of slavery led to an intense period of (re)spatialization. Taking the question of abolition as a major factor that shaped the reactions of different actors to the many spatialization processes characterizing this transitional setting, this book studies spatial imaginations reflecting such reactions in examples of abolitionist and proslavery literature of the era. Through the diversity of imaginations, this book points to a multitude of Souths located in various economic, political, and cultural entanglements in the American Hemisphere, the Circumcaribbean, or the Circumatlantic. Thus, Imagining Southern Spaces challenges monolithic and provincial representations of the region as antithetical to the rest of the country.
